1st ID DOCUMENT AND 1st ADULT PASSPORT

Please note: One appointment per child/applicant. If you are applying for two children, you must book two appointments.

Appointment Requirements:

  1. Ensure to come with BLACK INK pen
  2. Child must be at least 15. 9 months old to apply for 1st ID document.
  3. To issue 1st adult passport the child must be 16 years and above.
  4. You can only apply for the new passport if the validity of the current passport is less than 12 months.
  5. Applicants 16 years and older applying for first adult passport must also apply for an ID book along with the passport
  6. Both parents must be present if the child is below 18 years old.
  7. All application forms must be fully completed but not signed, as they must be signed in the presence of a Home Affairs Official.
  8. Ensure to come with all originals and 3 x copies of supporting documents (per application), the official will certify them.
  9. Please do not make firm travel bookings before obtaining your passport.
  10. As per DHA Circular third party collection of passports is strictly prohibited. If applying for a passport within South Africa, the DHA Office where the application is lodged, cannot redirect the passport for dispatch to the Mission.

Forms and Documentation:

  • Complete forms fully in BLOCK LETTERS using BLACK INK, do not sign them.
  1. Form DHA-73: Must be downloaded and complete fully before your appointment date.
  2. Form BI-529 :Must be downloaded and complete fully on both the sides before your appointment date
    • Determination of Citizenship Status. The purpose of this form is to establish that as a South African Citizen you have not lost your Citizenship and that all your details mentioned therein are according to the National Population Registrar.
    • Specific Sections of the form DHA/BI-529 to complete
    • Part A: questions 9, 10 and 11 are most important for the applicant. N.B. Number 9 you must write the date you entered UK 1st time to live /work in UK, number 10(d) must also be answered, by circling a No or a Yes. Circle “NO” if you do not have Retention of SA Citizenship Letter, Circle “YES” if you have a letter of Retention of SA citizenship, bring your 1st Retention letter/certificate with you on the day of your appointment.
    • Part B: The relevant marital status can be written next to the words “Marital Status” on the form (e.g. Never married/ Married/ Divorced/Widowed). The details of the applicant’s current or former spouse must then be completed on the DHA-529, whether deceased or divorced or widowed.

    • Part C and D: Both the parents’ details must be completed including their ID numbers and foreign citizenship.
    • Part E: sign in the presence of Official, Complete with valid telephone/mobile number, email address (in block letters) and physical address must be provided.
    • Make 2 x copies of the completed original form DHA-529 before you attend the appointment.
  3. Form DHA-9: This bar-coded form cannot be downloaded. You will get it on the day of your appointment.

DOCUMENTS TO BE SUBMITTED (Original plus 3xcopies of all documents)

  1. Current passport (last SA passport)
  2. Applicant’s South African unabridged birth certificate (where both the parents’ names are mentioned)
  3. Also, applicant’s foreign unabridged birth certificate if born outside RSA
  4. If applicant has foreign nationality, please provide proof as to how and when the foreign nationality was acquired/granted, such Naturalization /Registration Certificate or foreign birth certificate issued by the Embassy/ letter from the authorities stating the date and means you acquired the nationality.
    • Please note, a foreign passport/birth certificate is not a proof of foreign citizenship/nationality as it does not indicate when(date) and how you acquired the citizenship.
    • g. If you as an applicant have British citizenship and you do not have any of the above, you/parents may visit the British Home Office web page: www.gov.uk/hm-passport-office-office., to get the information how to obtain the document.
    • You may also send an e-mail to: Queries@hmpo..gov.uk attach copies of your UK passport, birth certificate and proof of your parents UK citizenship documents, if you are 16 years and above then you must send the e-mail.
    • If you have any other nationality (other than British) and you do not have any of the above documents, then please contact the country’s authorities and request them a letter stating the date and means of you acquiring the citizenship/nationality
    • If any document is in a foreign language, you must get them officially translated in English language. You must bring in copies of both the documents. i.e. document in foreign language and officially translated copies in English.
    • Do not book an appointment until you get the letter.
  1. Letter of Retention of South African citizenship (if it was issued to you).
  2. Marriage certificate. If married outside South Africa, a legalized/Apostille Marriage Certificate is must even if married/divorced a foreigner.
    • For Legalization of UK marriage certificates and UK divorce decrees visit https://www.gov.uk/get-document-legalised.
    • Please Note: Apostille Certification can be obtained only from Foreign Commonwealth and Development Affairs.
    • If married outside RSA, it is compulsory to register your marriage or divorce in RSA (even if married to a non-SA citizen).

  1. Six very clear, professionally taken colour photos of full face of applicant, showing only head and shoulders measuring 35mm x 45mm. Without glasses and clear forehead (not covered by hair).
  2. The 1st ID document is free.
  3. Processing fees (Non-Refundable) £58.00 (British Pounds) it must be deposited electronically into the High Commission’s Account using the details below:

  • Pay at least three working days before your appointment date.

PARENTS’ DOCUMENTS ARE REQUIRED FOR 1ST ID DOCUMENT AND 1ST ADULT PASSPORT (even if the applicant is 18 years old and above, original plus x 3 copies:

  1. Both the parents’ documents: their ID documents/ID cards, SA passports or foreign passports for non-SA parent , SA permits,  SA birth certificates, proof of their foreign citizenship for SA parents: proof as to how and when the foreign nationality was acquire/granted, such Naturalization /Registration Certificate or foreign birth certificate issued by the Embassy/ letter from the authorities stating the date they acquired the nationality.
    • Please note foreign passport/birth certificates (even of parents) is not a proof of foreign citizenship/nationality as it does not indicate when(date) and how your parents acquired the citizenship.
    • If the parents have British citizenship and they do not have the proof, to get the document, they may visit the British Home Office web page: gov.uk/passport-advice-line;
    • They may also send an e-mail to: Queries@hmpo..gov.uk attach copies of their UK passport, birth certificate and proof of their parents’ UK citizenship documents etc.
    • Wait till the letter is issued to book the appointment.
  1. Retention of SA citizenship letters of both the parents if it was issued.
  2. Marriage certificate.
    • If married or divorced outside South Africa, your marriage/divorce must be registered in RSA even if married to Non-SA citizen.
    • A legalized/Apostille Marriage Certificate and Divorce Decree is required.

The average processing time is six to nine months. You will be notified by e-mail as soon as the ID document and passport is received. You will receive two separate e-mails for each document. On receipt of both e-mails, you can collect both documents together.

PLEASE NOTE: If you do not comply with any of the above requirements, including copies, you will not be assisted and you will have to book a new appointment.

The collection time for the new passport and ID document is between 10 am to 12:00 pm Monday to Friday (except for Bank Holidays (CLOSED)).
