Media Guidelines for the G20 Summit

South Africa, as Chair of the G20, will host the G20 Summit at the NASREC Expo Centre in Johannesburg from 22 to 23 November 2025 under the theme: Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability.

Official Media:

Only 3 official media per G20 and invited countries will be given accreditation for the Summit.

One photographer, one video camera person, a social media person and an official media liaison officer.

All official media will be accredited online for the official delegation by the Embassy of their country from (accreditation workstream to confirm dates).

Official media bringing in equipment to the Summit must submit a list of all equipment with serial numbers, brand name and type on a note verbal via their respective Embassies before the closing date.

The following accreditation process will apply:

Venue and dates:

  • The venue for accreditation is the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) in Sandton from 14 November 2025 to 22 November 2025.
  • Accreditation will be only for media that have applied online and have been approved for accreditation.

Required documents to accompany the application form:

  • A copy of a valid professional press card or equivalent identification (ID/Passport).
  • A letter of assignment on a letterhead from the journalist’s organisation, indicating his/her function.

NB: It is also advisable to carry hard copies of all the required documents in case of any necessary security checks.

Passports and visas:

Members of the media from those countries exempted from visa requirements to South Africa need not apply for visas.

All other applicants must comply with the South African visa requirements.

Journalists should contact the nearest South African Diplomatic or Consular Mission to request a South African visa.

Yellow fever certificates will be required at the ports of entry for journalists travelling from yellow fever-designated countries.

Official media travelling on Diplomatic Passports do not require a visa to enter South Africa.

Customs clearance for media equipment:

Accredited media personnel bringing technical equipment with them to South Africa will be subject to full customs control.

Journalists bringing in heavy equipment that will require space outside of the plenary halls will need to relay this information before 03 November 2025 to the following officials:

Journalists are required to apply for an ATA carnet, which is used to clear customs without paying duties and import taxes on merchandise that will be re-exported.

Media facilities:

Access to media facilities will be available only to accredited media representatives. Accreditation will be open to bona fide journalists, broadcasters, photographers, film and television camera crews, and technicians.

A Media Centre, with facilities for print, online and electronic media, will be available at the summit venue – Hall 5.

A general work area with WIFI will be provided at the Media Centre.

Limited, enclosed 4×4 TV booths will be available on request.

Limited, enclosed 3×3 radio booths will be available on request.

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) services are available at the Media Centre.

Media coverage of the summit:

A pooling system will be used for this summit. The objective of the media pools is to assist with the management of the number of media to be allowed in certain areas, taking into consideration space limitations.

The media will need to apply to be part of the pools available at the Information Desk in the Media Centre.

The opening and closing sessions during the meetings are open to journalists, depending on the availability of space within the meeting rooms. Media practitioners will be informed of how to enter the plenary halls in the following ways:

  • Guidelines will be circulated to all media on the database of G20 and invited countries and uploaded on the website.
  • Regular announcements via the PA System in the Media Centre.

Journalists are advised to make sure they arrive at the venue in good time to clear all entry security procedures before the meetings start and to register to be part of the pool.

Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA):

ICASA is governed by the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa Act, 2000 (Act No. 13 of 2000), and the Electronic Communications Act, 2005 (Act No. 36 of 2005) (“the ECA”). The primary object of the ECA is to provide for the regulation of electronic communications in the public interest and for that purpose, amongst others to:

11.1 ensure efficient use of the radio frequency (RF) spectrum.
11.2 provide access to broadcasting signal distribution for broadcasting and encourage the development of multi-channel distribution systems in the broadcasting framework.
11.3 promote stability in the ICT sector.

In terms of section 31(1) of the ECA, “no person may transmit any signal by radio or use radio apparatus to receive any signal by radio except under and in accordance with a radio frequency spectrum licence granted by the Authority to such person in terms of the ECA”.

In terms of section 32(1) of the ECA, “no person may possess any radio apparatus unless he or she is in possession of a radio frequency spectrum licence or is exempted in terms of section 31(6) of the ECA”.

Frequencies are assigned as per the South African Table of Frequency Allocations (SATFA) using the Frequency Assignment Radio Licensing guidelines. The process takes approximately four (4) weeks before a spectrum licence is granted and issued.
