Binding of treaties
- All agreements must be bound before signature. The South African Treaty Section in the Office of the Chief State Law Adviser (IL) (OCSLA) (IL)) from DIRCO is responsible for the binding of all international agreements, declarations of intent and instruments of ratification/accession.
- International agreements are printed on special treaty paper and bound and sealed in the South African treaty covers.
- Once an agreement has been certified by the State Law Advisers of the OCSLA (IL) and a President’s Minute has been obtained, the line-function department or relevant desk at DIRCO can provide the Treaty Section with an electronic copy of the finalised text as well as a copy of the President’s Minute.
- The Treaty Section will then commence with the formatting, printing, binding and sealing of the agreement.
