APPLICATION FOR DETERMINATION OF SOUTH AFRICAN CITIZENSHIP

SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION BY POST

Determination of South African citizenship is referred to the Department of Home Affairs in South Africa where all the information provided will be checked/assessed and our office will be informed of the outcome.

 

REQUIREMENTS :

  1. Fully completed DHA-529 form, in BLACK INK and BLOCK LETTERS (FULLY COMPLETED means all questions on the two forms must be answered. Please do not answer “NIA”, it is not an answer to any of the
    • Part A: questions 9, 10 and 11 are mostly important for the N.B. number 10(d) must also be answered, with circling a No or a Yes. NO if you are applying for the FIRST TIME for Retention. Yes if you applied for a Retention previously and attach your 1stRetention copy.           
    • Part B: The relevant status can be written next to the words Marital Status on the form (e.g. Never married/ Married/ Divorced/Widowed). The details of the applicant’s current or former spouse must then be completed on the DHA-529 whether deceased or divorced or widowed)
    • Part C and D: Both the parents’ details must be completed including their ID.
    • Part E: Ensure that form DHA-529 is signed. Valid telephone/mobile number, email address (in block letters) and physical address must be.

2.  Certified copies x 2 of the following supporting documents:

  • Current passport
  • ID book or Smart ID Card
  • Unabridged Birth Certificate
  • Marriage certificate/Divorced Decree (If married/Divorced outside SA, then you need to submit Legalised/Apostille marriage certificate) to be submitted (for a woman irrespective of will or will not change the surname).

  • If you have dual nationality, please provide proof as to how and when you acquired the foreign nationality, such Naturalization /Registration Certificate or foreign birth certificate issued by the Embassy/ letter from the authorities stating the date you acquired the nationality. (Please note foreign passport is not a proof of foreign citizenship/nationality as it does not indicate as to when(date) and how you acquired the citizenship).

  • Letter of retention of your South African Citizenship i.e. Section 6 (2) if foreign citizenship was acquired as a major ( i.e. at the age of 18 and after)
  • Letter of exemption i.e. Section 26 (B) (if foreign citizenship was acquired as a major ( i.e. at the age of 18 and after) and before 6 October 1995)
  • Proof of South African citizenship i.e. South African naturalization certificate and South African immigration permit (if you are not a South African citizen by birth/descent)
  • Any other document that can assist in expediting and finalizing the

The average processing time is six months.

The outcome will be posted as soon as it is received in the office.
