Message of condolences following the flash floods in the Republic of the Sudan
His Excellency Cyril Ramaphosa, President of the Republic of South Africa, has expressed his sympathy to the people of the Republic of the Sudan, following the flash floods that have killed one hundred and twenty-four (124) people, destroyed ninety-eight thousand (98 000) houses, partially damaging ninety-seven thousand (97 000) acres of agricultural land and affected more than three hundred and fifty-one (351) public utilities in the sectors of education and health since the beginning of the rainy season in June 2022.
On 21 August 2022, Sudan declared a state of alert and emergency on six states, including River Nile, Gezira, White Nile, West Kordofan, South Darfur and Kassala as the floods and heavy rainfall that has affected 15 out of a total of 18 states in Sudan continues to pour.
South Africa and Sudan share cordial relations that are steeped in history, dating back to the days of our struggle against apartheid.
The Government and people of South Africa send their deepest sympathy and condolences to the people of Sudan. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during these trying times, particularly, the families that have lost loved ones in the floods.
