Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Mr Alvin Botes, hosted a Roundtable Discussion on Solidarity under the theme: “Strengthening Global Solidarity for Justice, Peace and Self-Determination.” The event was held at the Richards Bay Auditorium on 12 June 2026.
Among the dignitaries were the Ambassadors of the Republic of Cuba and the State of Palestine. Both ambassadors were afforded an opportunity to address the gathering on the challenges and injustices faced by their respective countries. During their remarks, they expressed appreciation for the unwavering support demonstrated by South Africa through its continued solidarity initiatives and engagements.
In his opening remarks, Deputy Minister Botes formally welcomed the newly appointed Cuban Ambassador, His Excellency Fakri Rodriguez Pinelo. He underscored the need to leverage solidarity efforts to promote justice, peace and development.
The Deputy Minister further proposed the establishment of a dedicated mechanism to coordinate and strengthen Cuba solidarity initiatives, ensuring greater engagement, collaboration, and support for solidarity-related programmes within the province.
The ambassadors acknowledged South Africa’s commitment to the promotion of justice, peace, human rights and self-determination, and commended the country for its principled stance in advocating for the peoples of Cuba and Palestine. They further conveyed their gratitude for South Africa’s ongoing efforts to support international solidarity and to champion the cause of oppressed peoples on the global stage.
