Mr Alvin Botes was appointed as the Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation on 30 May 2019. Prior to this, he was a member of the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature from 2009 to 2018.
During this period, he was appointed as a member of the Executive Council (MEC) in the Northern Cape Provincial Cabinet and served as the MEC for Social Development (2009 to 2013) and MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (June 2013 to February 2018).
In February 2018, he became a member of the National Assembly and served as a member of the portfolio committees on Basic Education, Water and Sanitation (alternate) and Sports and Recreation.
In December 2017, he was elected as member of the African National Congress (ANC) National Executive Committee (NEC) and served on the following sub-committees: Information and Communications; National Dispute and Resolutions, Social Transformation and International Relations.
Mr Botes worked full time for the ANC (Northern Cape) as Provincial Head of Policy, Research and Analysis from 1999 to 2009. He served as ANC Youth League Provincial Treasurer, Provincial Chairperson and on the NEC from 2003 to 2009. He also served in the ANC Provincial Executive Committee, and as the Deputy Provincial Secretary from 2003 to 2017.
Mr Botes holds a Bachelor’s degree in Technology (Business Administration), a Post-graduate Diploma in Public and Development Management and a National Diploma in Management, obtained from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. He is currently reading towards his Master’s in Management at the University of the Witwatersrand.
