Ms Annelize Schroeder, Chargé d’Affaires a.i., pays a floral tribute on behalf of South Africa, to the victims of the Nagasaki atomic bomb attack on 8 August 2024, at the Hypocenter Cenotaph. She also attended the emotional and touching Peace Memorial Ceremony on 9 August 2024, at the Nagasaki Peace Memorial Park, which included speeches by Prime Minister KISHIDA Fumio, the Mayor of Nagasaki, Mr SUZUKI Shiro and a representative of an atomic bomb survivor, Mr MISE Seiichiro.
On 6 August 2024, diplomatic representatives in Japan gathered at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial in the city in a solemn ceremony to pay tribute to those who fell victim to the atomic bomb 79 years ago. Prime Minister KISHIDA Fumio addressed the Ceremony and reiterated that Japan will lead international efforts to strengthen the momentum for nuclear disarmament. He also stated that the devastation and human suffering wrought upon Hiroshima and Nagasaki 79 years ago, must never be repeated. Ms Annelize Schroeder, Chargé dAffaires a.i. represented the South African Embassy at this occasion.
Chargé d'Affaires a.i., Ms Annelize Schroeder, pays a courtesy call to the newly appointed Chief of State Protocol at the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Tadayuki MIYASHITA, to congratulate him on his appointment, and to discuss details regarding upcoming bilateral and multilateral visits.
The Embassy welcomed a new group of Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) participants on 30 July 2024. The participants were encouraged to promote South Africa's rich cultural heritage and take the opportunity to learn as they take up their positions throughout Japan.
In celebration of Nelson Mandela International Day on 18 July 2024, the Embassy staff in collaboration with Machida City Office participated in the cleaning of Machida Squirrel Garden together with people living with disabilities. The Embassy staff also paid a visit to the Machida City Library, where books on Nelson Mandela's life are on display for the month in celebration of Nelson Mandela International Day.
