The South African Embassy in Tunisia was established in 1993, After the elections in 1994, diplomatic relations were formalised between the Republic of South Africa and the Republic of Tunisia. On the 9th of June 1994, the then South African Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Alfred Nzo, official opened the South African Embassy in Tunis.
South Africa and Tunisia enjoy a very healthy and mutually beneficial political and economic relationship. This relationship was further strengthened in 1996 when the inaugural session of the Joint Bilateral Commission between South Africa and Tunisia was held in Tunis. The third session of the Joint Commission was again held in Tunis during April 2001 and the Commission largely focused on enhancing relations in the fields of Trade and Investment; Health; Tourism, and Environmental Affairs; Arts & Culture, Science & Technology; and political consultations regarding Foreign Relations.
The Embassy represents the Republic of South Africa to the Republic of Tunisia. The Embassy of the Republic of South Africa aims to strengthen political, economic and social relations through structured bilateral agreements and high‐level engagements to advance South Africa’s national priorities, the African Agenda and South‐South cooperation. Additionally, South Africa’s foreign policy focuses on building unity, inclusive economic development and shared prosperity for the African continent and its people through its participation in multilateral structures.
H.E. Ambassador Lindiwe Hendricks is the current Head of Mission. She is supported by a team of officials designated according to the following sections:
• Political/ bilateral/Multilateral affairs
• Administrations, Consular services/ Civic and Immigration
• Trade and Economic
The Embassy also offers various services: consular and immigration services, inclusive of information to South African citizens visiting or living permanently in Tunisia as well as foreign citizens wishing to travel to South Africa.
