Bilateral Relations

The South African High Commission in Maputo plays a central role in advancing and strengthening the longstanding bilateral relationship between South Africa and the Republic of Mozambique. Rooted in a shared history of solidarity and mutual support, the relationship has evolved into a comprehensive strategic partnership encompassing political cooperation, trade and investment, security collaboration, regional integration, and people-to-people exchanges. The High Commission facilitates high-level political engagements, supports the implementation of bilateral agreements and decisions of the South Africa–Mozambique Bi-National Commission (BNC), and promotes cooperation across a broad range of sectors, including energy, transport and logistics, border management, migration, agriculture, tourism, education, health and environmental management.

South Africa and Mozambique work closely within the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the African Union (AU), and other multilateral forums to advance regional peace and security, economic integration, infrastructure development, and sustainable development. As one of Mozambique’s largest trading partners and a significant source of investment, South Africa remains committed to supporting inclusive economic growth and shared prosperity through enhanced trade, investment, and cross-border connectivity. Guided by the principles of Pan-Africanism, solidarity, multilateralism, constitutional democracy and Ubuntu, the High Commission promotes South Africa’s national interests while contributing to the achievement of the African Agenda and a peaceful, prosperous and integrated Southern African region.
