Completion of form BI-154 and DHA-154 form in full is required.
NOTE: Details on the application must be supplied according to the registration at birth and not of names assumed within the family. Where a name change has taken place in South Africa through the Department of Home Affairs, a copy of the approval letter or new amended certificate is required.
The following fees are applicable:
Birth Certificate: Non-refundable fee of AUD 6.00 for each certificate.
Payment must be in Australian Dollars (AUD) made out to the “South African High Commission” by way of Postal Money Order or Bank Cheque. One bank cheque or Postal Money Order for the total amount / whole family is preferred.
Personal cheques or credit cards are NOT accepted. Incorrect payment will not be accepted; in case of incorrect payment the cheque or postal money order will be returned to applicant.

Death Certificate application
Any person may apply for a copy of a Death Certificate provided that the deceased person’s death has been registered with the South African Government. The fact that the deceased may have died in South Africa does not necessarily mean that the death was registered with the South African Government.

Certificate of Non Impediment
Certificate of non impediment is issued to South African citizens who intend to get married outside the country. The purpose of the certificate is to confirm to foreign authorities that there are no impediments to enter into a marriage by a citizen concerned.
To obtain the certificate the following Documents must be submitted:
- Request letter confirming the reason for the application and the applicants contact details.
- Certified copies of applicant’s South African documents i.e ID Book, Passport, Birth Certificate.

Registration Of A Marriage Abroad There is no provision for the registration of the marriage of a South African citizen solemnized in a foreign country. The Department of Home Affairs may however be informed of the marriage, so that the marital status and surname, if it has changed, of a South African citizen to be updated on the Population Register. The following documents must be submitted to register the marriage:
There is no application fee for the registration of a marriage with the Department of Home Affairs, no certificate would be issued. Person’s whose surnames have changed, may apply for a tourist passport and/or identity document, reflecting the married surname. Current legislation stipulates that female married applicants may elect to use their married surname, their maiden surname, a combination of both current married surname and maiden surname i.e. double-barrel surname or any other surname which she bore at any prior time, without having to formally apply for change of surname. Registration Of A Divorce Abroad
There is no formal application for registration of the divorce of a South African citizen, who got divorced abroad.
The Department of Home Affairs should however be informed of the divorce, so that the marital status, of a South African citizen may be updated on the National Population Register.
The following documents must be submitted to register the divorce:
- A letter/written request containing the applicants full contact details such as address, mobile phone number and email address;
- Certified copy of the applicant’s South African passport/identity document/birth certificate;
- Certified copy of the foreign divorce decree accompanied by an English translation by a sworn translator if the original divorce decree is not in English;
- Certified copy of the marriage certificate;

Reporting A Death That Occurred Outside South Africa
The Department of Home Affairs should be notified of the deaths of South African citizens / South African permanent residence permit holders that occur outside South Africa.
The following documents must be submitted to register the death:
- Written request containing the applicants full contact details such as address, mobile phone number, email address and copy of ID/Passport;
- Certified copy of the deceased South Africans passport/identity document/birth certificate;
- Certified copy of the foreign death certificate accompanied by an English translation by a sworn translator if the original certificate is not in English.
- Completion of the form DHA-1663.
There is no application fee for the registration of a death with the Department of Home Affairs, no certificate would be issued.
