Statement by Ambassador Mathu Joyini Permanent Representative of South Africa to the United Nations, during the UN General Assembly 10th Emergency Special Session on the Illegal Israeli actions in occupied East Jerusalem and the rest of the Occupied Palestinian Territory, 26-27 October 2023

Like many here in this hall today we are deeply disturbed by the harrowing images of death, destruction and turmoil which have engulfed Gaza as a result of Israeli bombardment of civilians, essential infrastructure and places of worship. As the international community, we must be united in calling for an immediate comprehensive ceasefire. Humanitarian corridors should be opened immediately so that aid and other basic services can reach all those in need.
