Bilateral Relations

DIRCO (Department of International Relations and Cooperation) aims to strengthen political, economic and social relations through structured bilateral agreements and high‐level engagements to advance South Africa’s national priorities, the African Agenda and South‐South cooperation. The department embraces relevant national priorities by strengthening bilateral cooperation with individual countries, particularly through focussing on increasing exports of South African goods and services, foreign direct investment with technology transfers into value‐added industries and mineral beneficiation, and inbound tourism and skills enhancement.

The Republic of South Africa and the Republic of Mali established formal diplomatic relations in May 1994 followed by the opening of embassies/official representation in 1995 and 2002 respectively. In December 2000, the two countries signed Agreement for the establishment of a Joint Commission for Cooperation (JCC).

Therefore, South Africa’s bilateral relations with Mali are conducted through the Joint Commission for Cooperation (JCC) which is preceded by a Senior Officials Meeting (SOM) that serves as the focal point in the implementation of the JCC outcomes and other high-level visits.

South Africa and Mali are strategic partners with bilateral cooperation encompassing many areas of mutual interest at national, regional and multilateral levels.
