An application for a port of entry visa shall be made in person at the VFS application centre situated in Lugogo by-pass, Forest Mall (except for categories of persons exempt from this requirement as determined by the Mission), in terms of Regulation 9(2) of the Immigration Regulations where a person is ordinarily resident or holds citizenship in Uganda and shall be accompanied by the following:
- A valid passport – a passport must be valid for not less than 30 days after the expiry of the intended stay. It must have two unused pages. A certified true copy of the passport must accompany the application.
- A fully completed application form (BI-84) signed by the applicant.
- Prescribed fee of USD61, in case of paying applicants.
- A valid yellow fever certificate and a certified true copy of the certificate.
- Two colour passport photographs.
- A return or onward ticket.
- Proof of sufficient funds – to be proven by means of a 3 months original bank statement or certified copies thereof 9to include the current month), to cover air flight ticket and living expenses during the sojourn in the Republic. Applications under the cover of a Note Verbal travelling to South Africa for official visits are exempt from this requirement. Holders of Diplomatic or Official passports applying under cover of a Note Verbal for a private visit to South Africa must comply with all of the requirements.
- In case of attending an activity or an event, a letter will be required from the organisation in Uganda and the host in South Africa under whose control the activity will take place and should also clearly stipulate the duration of stay in the Republic.
- For medical consultations/emergencies, a referral letter and a letter from the receiving hospital/attending physician are required.
- NB: Turnaround time for the finalization of a visa application shall be 5 (five) working days-) processing period may go beyond the 5 working days in case the application is queried), except for medical emergencies and other applications at the discretion of the Mission.
- NB: Any applicant for a visa may be requested to be interviewed, whenever it appears necessary.
- NB: Incomplete applications will not be accepted.
- Parent(s) or legal guardian of a child(ren) studying in the Republic, who are applying for extended visa(s), will be required to produce the following.
- A letter from the institution where the child(ren) is studying and the duration of study.
- An application for a visitor’s visa exceeding a period of three months shall be accompanied by documentation/motivation detailing the purpose of the regular visits and, where necessary, proof of relation between the applicant and the host.
- Bona fide frequent travellers may qualify for visas valid for a period of two to three years- not applicable to first time travellers. To present a motivation letter from host.
- Academics and Business travellers holding passports from African countries, who are bona fide frequent travellers, may qualify for visas for a period of up to ten years.
NB: A person who overstays after the expiry of his/her visa, may:
In case of a person who overstays for a period not exceeding 30 days, be declared undesirable for a period of 12 months.
In the case of a person who overstays for the second time within a period of 24 months, be declared undesirable for a period of two years.
In the case of a person who overstays for more than 30 days, be declared undesirable for a period of five years.

A full birth certificate to form part of a visa application.
In case of one parent travelling with a child(ren), such parent must produce a consent in the form of a parental consent affidavit signed by both parents a court order granting full parental responsibilities and rights or legal guardianship in respect of the child, if he/she is the parent or legal guardianship of the child; a death certificate of the other parent registered as the parent of the child on the birth certificate of the child, in the case where the other parent is deceased.
In case of unaccompanied minor child(ren) the following must be submitted:
A letter from the person who is to receive the child(ren) in the Republic, containing residential address and contact details.
Certified copies of the identity documents of the parent(s) or legal guarding of the child(ren); their proof of residential address and contact details.
Certified copies of the identity document or valid passport or permanent residence permit of the person to receive the child(ren).
Information regarding other specific categories of visas, such as study visas, work visas, business visas, etc. can be obtained from the High Commission/ VFS centre.
No photocopying services will be provided. Applicants to bring own copies as well as original documents. The South African High Commission will only assist in certifying the documents for South African nationals / SA Permanent residence holders.
