This exemption will enable you to become a citizen of another country without losing your South African citizenship.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This exemption is applicable to South African citizens who have not yet acquired the citizenship of another country but who are contemplating of becoming one or in the process of obtaining one.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is important to apply for Retention<em>\u00a0before<\/em>\u00a0acquiring Foreign Citizenship or you will lose your status as a South African Citizen. Make sure you have received your retention certificate before attending the swearing in ceremony. Requirements:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Completed form\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dirco.gov.za\/ottawa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/67\/2025\/04\/bi1664.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BI-1664<\/a>\u00a0(Do not to write N\/A or draw lines through the form if the question does not apply, leave blank space). All forms to be completed in\u00a0<strong>BLACK INK<\/strong><\/li>\n\n<li>Completed form\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dirco.gov.za\/ottawa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/67\/2025\/04\/BI-529_Determination_Citizenship.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BI-529<\/a>\u00a0(Do not to write N\/A or draw lines through the form if the question does not apply, leave blank space).<\/li>\n\n<li>Certified copy of the front page of the South African ID Book, or a passport<\/li>\n\n<li>Certified copy of South African birth certificate<\/li>\n\n<li>Certified copy of Canadian Permanent Residency card<\/li>\n\n<li>Notarized sworn affidavit stating that no other citizenship has been taken. (<a href=\"https:\/\/dirco.gov.za\/ottawa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/67\/2025\/04\/Sample_of_Affidavit.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Click here to see a sample<\/a>).<\/li>\n\n<li>Money order for\u00a0CAN $23\u00a0per applicant made payable to the \u201cSouth Africa Consulate General\u201d in Toronto\u00a0or\u00a0to the \u201cSouth African High Commission\u201d in Ottawa .\u00a0No\u00a0cash, please.\u00a0No\u00a0personal cheques, please.<\/li>\n\n<li>Pre-paid self-addressed\u00a0small express\u00a0envelope.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Please note:<\/strong>\u00a0Form\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dirco.gov.za\/ottawa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/67\/2025\/04\/BI-529_Determination_Citizenship.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BI-529<\/a>\u00a0must be submitted with all applications.
