Through the Department of Trade and Industry we look at certain key industries where South Africa is comparatively and competitively very strong. These sectors include:

  • Agro-processing (fisheries and aquaculture; floriculture; fruit and vegetables processing plants; meat processing; confectionary; wine production; indigenous teas natural fibres);
  • Automotive Industry engine parts and components; body parts etc.);
  • Chemicals and Allied Industries (production of titanium dioxide pigment; beneficiation of fluorspar; beneficiation of polypropylene used in automotive components building and construction industries);
  • Electro-Technical Industries (software application; mobile applications; smart metering; embedded software; radio frequency identification; process control, measurement and instrumentation; security and monitoring solutions and financial software);
  • Metal Industries;
  • Capital Equipment and Allied Services (manufacture and assembly of mining, agricultural and construction equipment and utilities i.e. Reticulation plants and pipe lines);
  • Transport Equipment (rolling stock i.e. Locomotives, wagons and coaches; harbour construction and equipment; production of permanent ways i.e. Railway lines signalling equipment, electrification, bridges and stations etc.);
  • Clothing and Textiles (cotton spinning, weaving, and knitting; large scale manufacture of industrial textiles using polyester; manufacture of synthetic textiles for the apparel sector; wool and mohair production – downstream opportunities for yarns, knitwear and fabric etc.;
  • BPO&O and IT-Enabled Service (call centres back –office processing; shared corporate services; legal processing outsourcing etc.)
  • Aerospace (aviation related services including maintenance, repair, and overhaul; aviation training services; specialized manufacturing of avionics, including health usage monitoring systems etc.);
  • Tourism (hotels and self-catering resorts; adventure; sport conference; cultural tourism);
  • Energy (power generation; alternative energies; energy infrastructure etc);
  • Film and Media (film studios; distribution infrastructure etc.);
  • Design (jewellery, fashion, design etc.)
