Wesgro, the Cape Town and Western Cape official Tourism, Trade and Investment Promotion Agency, has completed a successful Tourism, Trade and Investnent outward mission to Ethiopia, Addis Ababa from 25-28 April 2023. This was in collaboration with the South African Embassy, Addis Ababa Chamber of Commerce & Sectorial Associations and Ethiopian Investment Commission. Sectors of focus during the visit included: Agri- business; Construction; Tourism and Services.

Establishment and the Launch of the Joint Technical Committee(JTC) on Tourism Cooperation

On Thursday 23 March 2023, Mr Victor Tharage, the Director-General from the Department of Tourism of the Republic of South Africa, and H.E. Madam Selamawit Dawit: the Deputy Minister from the Ministry of Tourism of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia(FEDRE) signed a Minute on the Establishment and the Launch of the Joint Technical Committee(JTC) on Tourism Cooperation, between the two Sisterly countries.
The Minister of Tourism of the FEDRE, H.E. Ambassador Nassise Chali, and Charge d’ Affairs from the South African Embassy, Mr Chuma Mapokgole, were among the dignitaries that graced the occasion with their presence.

South African Embassy in Addis Ababa celebrated 29 years of a Democratic, Non- racial, Non-sexist and Unitary South Africa.

 
On 26 May 2023, This auspicious occassion was graced by the presence and address by the Minister ìn the Presidency for Women, Youth and People with Disabilities of the Republic of South Africa: H.E. Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma; the Director- General for Africa Affairs from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia : H.E. Ambassador Fesseha Shawel, and the Deputy Chairperson for the African Union Commission: Dr Monique Nsanzabaganwa.
 
Various Government departments were represented by dignitories at high level, these include the Ministry of Innovation and Technology, Ministry of Sport and Culture and the Ministry of Tourism.

A delegation from Government Printing Works( GPW) of the Republic of South Africa led by the CEO, Ms Alinah Fosi, has completed a successful working visit to Ethiopia from 11- 14 April 2023.

A delegation from Government Printing Works( GPW) of the Republic of South Africa led by the CEO, Ms Alinah Fosi, has completed a successful working visit to Ethiopia from 11- 14 April 2023.
The purpose of the visit was to explore areas of cooperation and to further strengthen bilateral relations between South Africa and Ethiopia.
During their visit the delegation paid a courtesy call to the Deputy Head of Mission Ms Matheko Rametsi.
They also conducted fruitful engagements with National Bank of Ethiopia, Bole Printing, Ethiopian Airlines and the Berhanena Selam Printing.

4th Session of the South Africa-Ethiopia Joint Ministerial Commission (JMC)

The Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Dr Naledi Pandor co-chaired the 4th Session of the South Africa-Ethiopia Joint Ministerial Commission (JMC) with her counterpart, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Ethiopia, H.E Demeke Mekonnen. 


The JMC oversees the implementation of numerous bilateral agreements and Memoranda of Understanding across various sectors, including trade and investment, science and innovation, health, education, and culture. 


The JMC was preceded by the Senior Officials Meeting (SOM) on 27-28 July 2023 and will receive feedback on the Agreed Minutes of the SOM from the co-chairs of the two Working Groups that have been established, namely, Political and Social Working Group and the Economic Working Group. 


Diplomatic relations between South Africa and Ethiopia were established in 1994. 


In 2004, the two countries signed a General Cooperation Agreement (GCA), which makes provisions for annual meetings of senior officials. In 2008, a Joint Ministerial Commission (JMC) was established, which created an overarching framework for cooperation and partnership between the two countries.

 

In January 2020, President Ramaphosa received Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on an official visit to South Africa. 


During the visit, the two leaders emphasised the need to focus more on economic cooperation issues. 


Three legal instruments were signed: Waiver of Visas on Diplomatic and Service passports; Memorandum of Understanding on Health Cooperation, and Tourism Cooperation
