The Republic of South Africa and the Kingdom of Denmark share a longstanding and constructive relationship built on mutual respect, shared democratic values, and a commitment to multilateralism and sustainable development. Over the years, cooperation between the two nations has broadened across multiple sectors, including renewable energy, climate change, trade and investment, science and technology, and cultural exchange.

A key pillar of the bilateral partnership is the focus on energy and climate cooperation. Since 2011, South Africa and Denmark have worked closely on strategic initiatives such as wind energy mapping, the development of smart grid and metering systems, and progressive policy design to advance the green transition. These initiatives, underpinned by various Memoranda of Understanding, continue to support South Africa’s energy transition in alignment with both national priorities and global climate commitments.

Economic relations between the two countries remain robust and continue on a positive trajectory. In the first four months of 2025, Denmark’s exports to South Africa reached DKK 938.8 million, reflecting a 6.9% increase compared to the same period in 2024. Imports from South Africa rose to DKK 199.1 million, a 1.7% year-on-year increase. These figures highlight the growing importance of trade and investment as key drivers of bilateral cooperation.

Building on the strong and enduring partnership between the two nations, South Africa is poised to play an increasingly significant role in new Danish initiatives aimed at deepening collaboration across the African continent. In August 2025, Impact Fund Denmark, in collaboration with the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, launched a DKK 350 million Africa Facility to promote sustainable Danish investments in Africa. South Africa, with its advanced economy and strategic regional position, stands as a central partner in these forward-looking initiatives.
