WELCOME
I wish to welcome everybody to this platform in a country, about the size of eSwatini, both is size and population.
It is country with its own uniqueness as it was colonised by the Portuguese Colonial Empire and is surrounded mainly by countries, who manifest French culture, as France was the coloniser in those countries.
Indeed it is different from South Africa with Muslims being in the majority instead of Christians. It is country of contrasts in that it has substantial natural resources such as rivers, forests, minerals, oil etc but has stark poverty and unemployment.
We shall continue to study the possibilities and opportunities available in Guinea-Bissau to ignite cooperation with South Africa towards maximising our national interests.
Ambassador M.N. Mbete
BILATERAL RELATIONS
Bilateral relations between South Africa and Guinea-Bissau are notably robust, marked by active diplomatic engagement and collaboration across multiple domains. While these relations may not command the same level of prominence as South Africa’s engagements with certain other African nations, particularly those in Southern Africa, they nonetheless showcase a commitment to mutual cooperation and understanding.
South Africa and Guinea-Bissau have cultivated well-established diplomatic ties, exemplified by South Africa’s inauguration of its Embassy in the capital city of Bissau in 2008. This diplomatic presence underscores a strategic focus on economic diplomacy, aimed at fostering deeper economic collaboration between the two nations.
Moving forward, the emphasis remains on strengthening economic ties and advancing mutual prosperity through concerted diplomatic efforts.
